A Day in Venice!

Well, we are finally settled enough to start getting out and about here in Italy! I told Chad this weekend that we just had to get out of the house for a day at least because I am tired of looking at the long list of things to do and we just need to go out and have some fun! So, we hopped on the train this morning and we were off to Venice for the day. It was a beautiful day! The temperatures were in the 70's under a blue sky. The kids were great on the train ride and had fun just being out of the house for the day. We got off the train and started the long walk towards San Marco Basilica. To say that there are a lot of tourists in Venice is a total understatment. There were people everywhere and you never have to worry about getting lost because there is always a huge mass of people moving in one direction or the other. In other words if you just follow along you will probably end up where you want to be. Austin was a trooper walking all the way from the train station to the Rialto Bridge and the onto San Marco. He did complain a few times when it seemed to take forever to find someplace decent to eat and sit down. After they had some pizza they were ready to go again. Maddie had the best seat around because she was on Chad's back all day.
The Rialto bridge was really a great stop with wonderful views of the large canal and all the gondolas and boats. The San Marco Basilica and Square was amazing. I read about these places and when you get there you are just in awe of the beautiful structures that surround you. We were able to walk through the Basilica and tour the museum and terrace up some VERY steep stairs. We made it to the top though and the views of the square and the water were amazing. This was probably one of Austin's favorite parts because you could look down at all the people walking around the square, he thought it was pretty cool being way up above everyone.

After checking out those few sights we decided we better start heading back to the train station to be home for dinner. But not before we had a little gelato treat! What's an outing in Italy without a little gelato?! Then we caught the boat the takes you back to the train station just in time to catch the next train home.

Overall we had a great first day exploring Venice and I am sure we will be back again soon! Here are a few pictures from our day.
